On average we throw out 75 pounds of clothing and shoes per year per person. According to a study done by The Ellen MacArthur Foundation 1. Every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned. 2. Clothes release half a million tonnes of microfibers into the ocean every year, equivalent to more than 50 billion plastic bottle.
This is a big part of the reason I started incorporating textiles into my work. Okay, I realize I can’t save the world, but it makes me feel like I am doing my part.
Then I found out about FabScrap, this really cool company in Brooklyn that recycles designer fabric, you can buy online or go to their warehouse in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. They get scraps in from places like Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta, etc.
I’m on a mission to do some smaller works with templates from some of the new Prada bags I’ve been eyeing. Ill be taking a ride out to the terminal to see what they have that would work with this project. Stay tuned! Leather & Oil! <3
