This new series is a bold progression from Susan Washington’s New York City roots, channeling the spirit of the American West through a lens of female empowerment and exploration. Drawing inspiration from Robert Rauschenberg’s combines, the work blends pigment transfers, and gestural paint with intentional negative space that alludes to wide open landscape of the American West. The result is a striking composition where cowgirl iconography, urban edge, and layered memory collide with an empowering narrative. It’s an evolution of Washington’s Subway Sonnets - more spacious, empowering and rooted in freedom.
